video conference

there are so many videos constantly being emailed around and so much tv to watch on every screen that we're all on overload from time to time, right? add to that the fact that i work in television and am married to a television lover, i am often on MEDIA OVERLOAD. but there are certain videos that i still watch from time to time just because they make me feel good, and i wanted to share them with you this morning. 

do you remember this awesome wedding entrance? i still get chills because it's just so fun and thinking about the amount of effort all their friends put in to learn it and step outside their comfort zone to actually do it. obsessed. plus it's a great song. 

then there's this michael buble video that i just find contagious. first of all, i just love him so much. the song is so catchy, the video is so kitchy, and the horns...love those horns. and all the paper confetti reminds me of the paper confetti moments at my own wedding and at my sister's. priceless.

and you've seen the honey badger video right? omg. if you haven't, you're going to need to go somewhere where curses are okay, and watch it immediately.

oh, and one other music video. have you heard of lenka? i love this song of hers and the video is cute and quirky too. this is totally one of those songs that just makes me smile and tap my feet in a way that reminds me of my grandpa and makes me smile even bigger.

going gaga

every time i think lady gaga has a little too much hype, i'm reminded that the only thing eclipsing her hype is her talent. listen to (or watch) her live performance of howard stern from last month, below. 

i listened to it when it was live, and i've thought about it so many times since then that i just had to share it with you. i'm not normally someone who cares much about live vs. recorded, and i usually prefer the familiar, recorded version of a song to a new, live version...but this changed all that. when i hear the recorded version on the radio, i wish it was this one. and i'm in awe of her voice. at 7 in the morning, no less.

what did you do over the weekend, my friends?

on friday, we had dinner here with one of my good friends from high school and her new husband, and their newlywed love and enjoyment was palpable - so sweet. we talked and laughed about lots of things, including saved by the bell and how miss bliss was so screwed after the first couple years, and the impenetrably cool dylan mckay, especially his much-imitated voicemail message..."you know the drill." it's always so fun to be with people who have the exact same memories you do, isn't it?

want to walk down memory lane? enjoy. and what about this one? it's like a parody! ah, they just don't make 'em like they used to. though let's be real, i die for pretty little liars and gossip girl, and those opening themes are pretty well-executed too. take a look.

then on saturday, my eyes flew open with the thought that i needed a haircut, and within moments i was out the door, on my way to get one - no appointment! i went to a really nice little place on main street in port washington and it was a great experience. they tended to all the little details (you know how i feel about that) and i really enjoyed it. the man washing my hair had his own special technique rather than just phoning it in. he did a whole vigorous head grabbing situation while using conditioner, and he gave me a temple massage. when he dried my hair, he tied it all up in a tight little cloth - so neat and tidy. and then he even dried out my ears - total bonus, right?

by the time i got to the chair where they cut, there was a stack of current magazines and two men worked on the hair at once, while of course only one did the cutting. when i needed something from my coat and got up to get it, they sat me back down and went and brought my coat over to me, rather than just reaching into the pocket of it like i suggested. then when they blew it out, they both worked together and i had a backstage model moment. it was just a really nice morning, overall. i love when something turns from an errand into an experience.

so between the haircut and my home life, i read a ton of magazines this weekend, wrote a bunch and we ran lots of errands. i discovered a few deals along the way you should know about...really cheap frames at walmart that made me able to frame three pieces that required large (read: expensive) frames. well unfortunately, they're not online, but they're simple black box frames (like the black is only on the sides and the glass pops out and back in) and in all sizes they were $4 each. definitely worth a trip to walmart if you can bear it.

also, homegoods is rocking a serious collection of stuff from africa right now. you should probably go there immediately. like, now. you'll thank me.


and then yesterday i got a manicure and i had her try six different colors before i made a decision. i ended up with midnight in moscow, but it wasn't an easy road. i'm a little obsessed with cuckoo for this color - but it just didn't feel right on me. it's like i want everything in the world to be that color, except my nails.

so pretty, isn't it? other strong contenders were opi ink and good old russian navy.


most importantly of all, it was sunny for several hours this weekend and the snow began to melt while the birds began to sing. you can almost believe spring is coming, can't you? treat yourself to a glimpse into a warmer, brighter moment by picking up a bunch of colorful flowers just for you. i did, and i'm already feeling springier.

have you heard this totally adorable song? it's called the show and it's by lenka. i heard it as a lead-in to one of the shows i listen to on sirius and had to find it to share with you. the video is great too - i especially love the last 30 seconds - so cute!

and then, in a similar vein, annie little's fly me away, which you might recognize from the kindle commerical - another one i had to seek out and share. so happy sounding, especially the horns!

and the tone of these two songs is how i hope to feel over the next week when i'm away on fire island with my whole family. i hope you have a wonderful week, wherever you'll be.

the magic kingdom

have you heard this one? a few years ago, while searching for pictures for their wedding, an engaged couple discovered that their paths had crossed as children at disney world. in the foreground of this picture is donna and her brothers, and in the background is alex in a stroller being pushed by his dad.

at the time, alex's family lived in canada, and donna's in florida. they wouldn't meet until many years later when they found themselves falling in love at work.

it reminds me of this michael buble song i'm in love with that i posted a few months ago. it feels so good to watch this video, just go for it again. it makes me smile in a can't-stop-smiling way.

the universe works in funny ways - don't you just never stop being amazed?

baby love

i have to share the most precious pictures in the world with you. i can not take any credit for them whatsoever, as they're taken by an omaha photographer kelley ryden featured on the today show and they were brought to my attention by my kelly. so you see? the only credit i can take is that i am posting them for you to see and enjoy.

kelley and her twin sister (who poses the babies) only photograph babies in their first two weeks on earth because that's when they're the sleepiest. how cute is that? all these pictures and more are featured in their book sleeping beauties: newborns in dreamland. how incredible a gift would a session with these photographers be for the very beginning of a new beginning?

well spun

wedding season is coming, so i have to share this incredible company with you, well spun weddings. they will shoot video of a wedding, or they will work with video already shot and then they edit it into a one-song or three-song wedding film, or a longer documentary style version.

that alone is not original, but it's the style they use that is just transporting. their films evoke a vintage-style, intimate portrait of a wedding day, and they capture a feeling i've only ever experienced before watching time-worn, generations-old film...long before the slick stylings of typical wedding videos were ever born.

to me, a wedding film like this is a worthy investment for a bride and groom, or would make a beautiful, generous gift (even for an anniversary!) the facial expressions and moments captured are priceless, and they're not the kind that ever make their way into a traditional wedding video because they're slow and they reveal themselves subtly. and that's to say that they most perfectly capture the emotions felt on that special day - by the bride and groom, but also by their parents, their friends, and their children. those are the moments most precious, and most glowing in well spun's films.

take a few moments when you can relax and browse through the gallery of films. there are six of them, and they each display a different style wedding with different (excellent) song choices and i think you'll love them all.

i hope whatever your weekend plans are, you'll be able to include some pure enjoyment with the true arrival of spring in most places (except the rockies...what do you mean SNOW?). i'm looking forward to trying to make a little place for myself on my new balcony...you might remember what a haven my old balcony was, and i really do miss it. but it's a new season, full of possibilities and a new outdoor space to create and love.

we're starting our weekend with dinner at this restaurant with mitchell's aunt and uncle, so we'll be in good company. (and the restaurant doesn't look bad either).

i'm looking forward to a manicure and am debating between going light (sheer petal, to be exact) or dark with an OPI color like my private jet, which is a dark, glittery charcoal. my inspiration is this picture of khloe kardashian...hers is this deborah lippmann color, but my private jet might do the trick. do you think if i splurged for the $16 lippmann color, khloe's bling would come with it? what are your mani plans?

and while we're on the idea of dark...check out these beautiful pictures from an all black and white wedding...not sure i'd go that way, but it sure is gorgeous to look at.

i also encourage you to read this insightful, thoughtful post from one of my favorite blogs, concrete magnolia, about the wonder of blogs and the internet, as an addition to the magazines we all love so much. she's just such a lovely writer and i think you'd really enjoy her style.

since i already linked you to a song this morning, let's switch gears...check out this amazing youtube video of the creation of a totally incredible cake...in the shape of a dog. and it looks like a real dog, i tell you. the baker is elisa strauss of confetti cakes, and her work is highly regarded and pretty special to see. (she actually went to my high school and was a senior when i was a freshman, so i feel hometown pride for her too).

seriously, take a look around her website and marvel at it the fact that these are CAKES and not really a platter of sushi, a hat on top of a hatbox, or a toy train.
