an unfussy room

how totally gorgeous is this room? i love the softness of it. it's sweet and feminine, but not so much so that a man couldn't happily live there. there are so many things that speak to me about this room....the color of that wall is just perfection. and i'd know those poufs anywhere. i love the idea of them in place of a bench at the foot of the bed. the headboard reminds me of the one i die for from pottery barn and all together, the look is so unfussy and collected.

i love the pitch-perfect blue gray of this bedroom, alaskan husky by benjamin moore. it's so soothing and peaceful, and it looks amazing with the whites of the textiles and furniture. it just makes the room look like a place you want to be snuggled cozily on a cold winter day, but also a place you could be cool and and relaxed in the heat of summer. exactly what a bedroom should be.

to me, one of the best things about being a blog reader (and blog writer for that matter) is the constant exposure to interesting and beautiful ideas. specifically, i love all the projects that are out there, especially because so many of them are so doable, even if you're not that great at projects. yesterday, i shared the crumply goodness that is tissue paper, and today i have two more to share.

the chrome pig above is by an artist named harry allen, and has been featured in elle decor and other places of note. it's $190 which isn't outrageous for a special flourish in a room, but it's an investment.

so the lovely blogger at hello gorgeous came up with her own version and it looks amazing. feast your eyes.

LOVE doesn't begin to capture it. i don't think it's exactly the same as the fabric eddie ross and i love (yeah, i like to make it sounds like we love it together), but it's very close.

things like this inspire me to look at all things old and new with fresh eyes, not seeing only what's there, but what could be there. you too?

island blues

i spent a good part of this past weekend watching house hunters international. for some reason, every time i turned on the tv, there it was. in the past, i've always been depressed by the often tiny, cramped, not-pretty-at-all flats they've shown on hh international, but these editions were about vacation homes, and they were just beautiful, especially the ones in bali.

i've had these pictures in my files for a little while now and not surprisingly, they all happen to be from brilliant blue blogger erin from house of turquoise. her marvelous curation of all things lovely and blue is just always such a treat. if you're not already a fan, become one.

so i realized this morning as i looked through these images that they really all belong together. the only two that actually are from the same place are the outdoor ones.


i love the punches of islandy turquoise they all share, and the feel was right in sync with what i loved so much on HH.

isn't the painting of the window frames here ingenious? i feel the same way about the shutters above. i just love the vibrancy.

hello yellow

i'm having such a moment with yellow recently. okay, a lot of moments. there are so many great shades of it, and it takes on different personalities used in different ways.

i love it in fashion and accessories because it's such an expected color but can look funky or classic at any given moment.

and i love it in home design, where it often provides a pop of color, even in subtle tones, unmatched by any other shade. (see this great house beautiful guide for the best shades of yellow - i love number 7 especially).

a blank canvas (or four)

i've been in a very project-minded mood recently, so these colorblock painted canvases caught my eye as something totally DIY-able (no disrespect to the artists who make them, as they're great looking!).

unless i'm grossly miscalculating, all you'd have to do is get 4 canvases of whatever size you want and paint each one its own solid color. in the case of the blue set, the shades are slightly different than one another in the same family, while the set of earth tones are each a distinctly different shade. either option totally works.

although wisteria's sets vary in texture, as a DIY, they could lack that feature and look just as good, in my opinion. or of course, you could use a textured paint to get the exact look.

these could hang anywhere, in any formation and they're sharp-looking, modern and are a great way to fill wall space and add color to any room.

this is my kind of art project - no real artistic talent required. plus, you end up with good-looking, one-of-a-kind pieces custom made for your very own home. AND you'll know the artist personally...

earning our stripes

what are your thoughts on striped walls? i kind of love them! i think it's easy for a striped room to go horribly awry, but here are some images i've been collecting that i think get it right. what i notice that they all have in common is that the stripes are the same width in each color, rather than having one of the colors thicker.

in the case of the photo above, the stripes are two different shades in the same color family, which totally works and gives the room a soothing feel, despite its many colors and potentially busy stripe. another idea i've heard is to do the same exact color, just do one matte and one eggshell or glossy...that's a cool idea, isn't it?

the room below is also really soothing- i love the stripes in muted oatmeal and white, especially with the robin's egg blue in there too, and the use of the toile fabric against the graphic stripe.

this orange striped entryway makes me feel like i'm on vacation - love it. rather than using a contrasting pattern like the toile above, i sort of love how the couch is upholstered in a matching awning stripe to the wall. it's playful and fun.

here are a few in yellow, which i think is a great way to use such a vibrant color without overdoing it or having to wear sunglasses inside. the light totally bounces off these walls, but the interplay of the white and yellow tempers it just enough.

and look how unexpected and cool the ceiling here is. impossibly cool baby's room, btw (of course it's in the home of the painfully stylish jenna lyons).

here, in a more traditionally appointed nursery, turquoise and white stripes make an appearance and totally wake up the space. i love all the other punches of color mixed in here and how they play with the stripe.

and of course, black and white is always a classic combination in anything. check out the ceiling on the last picture here!

our downstairs powder room is screaming out to be spruced up but i don't want to paint it a solid color...i toyed with wallpaper, and i'm still considering it. but these stripes look pretty good...
