a summer classic

i'm all of a sudden pining for a pair of jack rogers navajo sandals. i'm ruefully recalling a day before i loved them...a day when i encountered an enormous rack of them, all in gold, all for $10. i could die. do you have a purchase that got away?

but what was NOT on that $10 rack -- because it wasn't yet born -- was the jack rogers navajo jellies! kind of obsessed with this new beach and pool-ready incarnation and at $68, these might be the way to go.

if the jellies weren't by the original designer and were instead a copy, they might be cheesy, but instead, they're a playful, summery nod to what is already an american summer classic. you want to argue with jackie o?

what's on your wish list right now?

weighing options

kitchen counter space is always at a premium, but i think this would be worth the real estate. how perfectly vintage and industrial is this kitchen scale? it's regrettably no longer available at anthro, but i keep the picture as a reminder of a wish list item for the future. what i find special about this one is that it goes a step further than your run of the mill antique scale in that the stainless steel finish has a high gloss which makes it look special and important.

love!

still life

aren't these photos the loveliest? they're from ahsley, of the blog butterflyfood, and she also (thankfully) sells her gorgeous photos on etsy. i just adore her work. i love the way her artistic eye has perfectly captured the extraordinary nature of truly ordinary things.

i would love to have a few of these framed simply and hanging in my kitchen. hmm....perhaps i will, since they're unbelievably affordable ($10.95 each or 3 for $25).

ashley has been sweet enough to offer the 5x7 black and white wooden spoons print to one lucky reader...comment on this post and be entered to win!

links and thoughts

sometimes i have so much to share with you that i need to go stream of consciousness-style, so here we go...

first, on weddings:

i had the pleasure of visiting the wedding dress shop lovely in the west village. it really was lovely, and i highly advise you visit if you are a bride, or you know one who loves pretty and girly and low key. the sign in their bathroom says "employees must look fabulous before returning to work." and they have a blog.

this royal wedding-themed wedding invitation on the wedding chicks is kind of royally awesome.

and while we're on the topic of kate middleton, BRIDEfinds has rounded up some ways to channel her.

bwed has such a sweet, charming post on the origin of the whole something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue thing...read it here, and look forward to a post coming soon about these very customs, cause i want to hear all about your somethings...

lauren from every last detail posted thoughtful, tactful tips for dealing with wedding vendors, and i think they actually apply to anyone you work with, wedding or no wedding. it's so true, and i think such a helpful thing for anyone to read...bride or no bride, just person functioning in the world.

WOW. the broke-ass-bride has done it again. check out these knockout wedding dresses, all for under a thousand dollars.

and on other topics...

i am reassured over and over again that mrs. meyer's lavender countertop spray is among my favorite things in the world. it makes cleaning like a spa experience. i'm continually obsessed. it's my ultimate, forever tiny treasure.

if you feel like you need a real spa vacation, feast your eyes on the standard hotel in miami beach.

i'm obsessed with the nate berkus show. every day. i've developed a DVR problem because i can't erase ones that don't appeal to me, because they all appeal to me. in addition to being so charming and normal and coolly uncool, it's little, simple, beautiful ideas like this and this that make me love him. it's like martha for dummies.

why do i love gwyneth paltrow so much? she's another one...cool but not cool. and by that i mean unbearably cool. have you seen her on glee? at the grammys? do you get GOOP? love. her. so. much.

apparently, there are fashionable medical id bracelets...who knew? i need to wear one because i had gastric bypass surgery. because of said surgery, i can't drink for a while, but if i could i would totes be mixing up some of this pomegranate liqueur with some bubbly. yum.

while on the jewelry train, i want one of these, in rose or yellow gold. maybe on pearls like this. really want one. like really really.

do you coupon? you really should. every once in a while, i get off the couponing boat, and then i wonder to myself how much money you really save couponing when i'm pondering getting back on. and then i remember...you save a BOATLOAD of money on the couponing boat. this site is a good place to start. the best deals are on household and beauty items, i find. and speaking of those items...

this one's for the ladies only (as if anyone but ladies reads honey living)...if you've ever felt like some nights you need a diaper rather than a maxi-pad for coverage, i found it for you. it's these. they're even bigger than they look. but i tell you, this is nighttime only material. they're so...protective...that they will change the way your pants fit. and you can read about my pants situation here.

and on that note, i'll sign off. i hope you trust that if i talk to you about feminine hygiene products, they're pretty remarkable. i tell you, these suckers are ridiculous.

ring me

how do you feel about unconventional engagement rings? i think lots us are still really into the idea of a diamond, understandably. but i think lots of other people are opening their minds to new ideas (or old ideas, in some cases), and going non-traditional. sometimes that can mean less money needs to be saved for a ring and the marriage part can hurry up already, and other times those rings can be even more than a standard solitaire. but i think regardless, it works best when it's not trying to be something it's not - it's not a faux anything, it's a totally real, authentic ring that suits the totally real, authentic woman who wears it.

i think it could be really liberating to break from tradition and go your own way, though i think sometimes it's hard to do on a subject that feels so steeped in status, convention and universally agreed upon standards.

do you think if you really want a diamond it's worth the wait? would you rather have a small or imperfect diamond than an alternative, no matter the size or quality? do you think the ability to buy a ring speaks to the readiness to marry? what does your ring look like, in reality or in your dreams?

i certainly love the traditional ring i have, but i often admire ones that are unexpected like some of these. i love several from blanca monros gomez, above and below...

and these seed rings of hers are so sweet and so incredibly reasonably priced.

you can see how individual ones could stack up over time (or all at once!) don't you love the idea of one for an engagement, one for a honeymoon, one for a baby, one for a first home, etc? i adore the idea of stacking rings, as evidenced here. i love the idea of doing them each in a different shape too, like this.

and she does custom work and creates things like this one or this one with a pear-shaped grey diamond which is so different and unexpected, in an understated way, don't you think?

and what about something really fun like this from fragments? it's moonstone and it's $100 (you're welcome if you don't already know about fragments).

for the yurman girl, check out this ruby ball on a braided silver band.

and there's something pretty amazing about this lemon quartz piece too, which also comes in amethyst and black onyx with silver.

something like this jumbo judith ripka totally stands out and would look amazing on any finger, especially the left one!

even for a lady who isn't into stones, a ring can feel special even just in pretty gold, like the top knot from ippolita. and i also love this silver and turquoise one in an earthy way...it's just waiting to be stacked with others.

i love the idea of a pearl engagement ring - seems so sweet and old-timey, right? this majorica one is gorgeous and so is this special one from mikimoto.

speaking of days of old, this 1930's mine cut diamond ring is such a good find on etsy and totally original, and the same goes for this rose cut diamond ring. i love the idea that no one else has your exact ring (at least no one in this century) and that it has real provenance. it's like a connection through the ages of a couple in love. and of course the look has been updated if that's your thing too - look familiar?

now in the a little out there but totally amazing category, would you wear something like these on your special finger? or maybe on your right hand? check out nam cho's moonstone and diamond creation...

or the ysl glass stone ring, and the ippolita modern rock candy ring.

and how about this bauble from vibe?

you know no one else will be twinning your ring with this bling.

katie decker's green amethyst creation...

and what about this amazing riff on a solitaire...

and you might remember when i discovered pomellato and fell for these little chestnuts...

and in the HOLY F&^%ING SH*T category, feast your eyes on this.

no matter what you wear, it's about who gave it to you and what it means, right? but let's be real - a little bling never hurt anyone.
